Desipianist-What is a Pianist?

A pianist is a musician who plays the piano. A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an ensemble or orchestra, or accompany one or more singers, solo instrumentalists, or other performers.

How to become a pianist?

1. Look for a good piano teacher in your location. No matter what age you begin or how far you want to go with becoming a pianist, you need a good teacher to get you started on the fundamentals.

2. Focus your attention on learning technique, sight reading and theory. A good teacher will constantly be drilling you on piano scale exercises. She will drill you on chords and fingerings as well.

3. Make up your mind to practice long and hard. Any musician will tell you that practice is the key to success.

4. Develop an interest in the classical pieces. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin pieces are often played at recitals. They are excellent for learning technique.

5. Relax and have fun with your piano, too. Play some upbeat, fun music. This will prepare you to play in clubs for entertaining if you feel drawn to that arena.

6. Think about using your growing skills as a pianist to play for your local religious group. Your service will be appreciated and you will gain confidence and build your skills.

7. Plan to go to college and major in music if you want to become a concert pianist. It takes years of experience and exposure playing in many recitals before you can be a professional.

There are two types of pianos and each vary in form and size:

Vertical/Upright Pianos - may be Full Size, Professional Upright, Console and Spinet.
Horizontal/Grand Pianos - may be Concert, Living Room, Parlor and Baby Grand to name a few.

First Known Piano:

Bartolomeo Cristofori created the gravecembalo col piano e forte around 1709 in Florence. By 1726, changes in Cristofori's early invention became the basis of the modern piano. The piano became very popular in the mid-18th century and was used in chamber music, concerti, salon music and in song accompaniments. The upright piano was favored by 1860.

Tempering an interval causes it to beat, which is a fluctuation in perceived sound intensity due to interference between close (but unequal) pitches. The rate of beating is equal to the frequency differences of any harmonics that are present for both pitches and that coincide or nearly coincide.
Piano tuning is the act of adjusting the tensions of the piano's strings, thereby aligning the intervals among their tones so that the instrument is in tune. The meaning of the term in tune in the context of piano tuning is not simply a particular fixed set of pitches. Fine piano tuning carefully assesses the interaction among all notes of the chromatic scale, different for every piano, and thus requires slightly different pitches from any theoretical standard. Pianos are usually tuned to a modified version of the system called equal temperament (see Piano key frequencies for the theoretical piano tuning). In all systems of tuning, each pitch is derived from its relationship to a chosen fixed pitch, usually A440.
